John Paul Village, Heathcote

John Paul Village is a 123 bed nursing home located in Heathcote, in Sydney's southern suburbs. The Village has a mix of high-care, low-care and self-contained living units scattered over a leafy bushland setting.

Early on, CEO of the Village, Brian Fitzgerald had identified ozone as a technology which could deliver economic and environmental benefits to the Village. However, when he trialled a cold-water ozone laundry system, he found the wash quality was not up to standard and the unit was causing OH&S problems for staff who were in the laundry.

After terminating the trial, Brian contacted the Greening Grey Program to enquire about the direct-injection system which is supported with Government funding under the Program. Geoff Homann from O3 Wash Pty Ltd then assessed the opportunity and developed a fully costed and scoped proposal for the JPV Board to consider. The proposal included a subsidy from the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund to help install the system.

Results

O3 Wash Pty Ltd delivered, installed and commissioned the direct-injection ozone laundry system at John Paul Village in November 2007. The system has been responsible for delivering environmental and economic benefits to the village, as per below:

Water Savings: 1,465kL worth $3,853 pa
Chemical Savings: $1,531 pa
Energy Savings: $12,270 pa
Total Annual Savings: $17,654 pa
Project Cost: $34,480
Simple Payback: 1.3 years
Government Rebate: $10,255 once-off grant

“We are extremely pleased with the ozone laundry system. Not only are we doing the right thing by the environment by reducing water consumption and preventing harmful greenhouse gas emissions, but we are making our facility more economically sustainable by reducing our utility outlays.

Our staff and residents are also very pleased because the linen is now whiter and softer than before the ozone system was in place. I would recommend all aged care providers look into the program.”
